Can my clipper blades be sharpened?
I hear this question all the time. I meet with numerous of groomers and vets who used the clipper blade till it becomes dull and then was just thrown out.
A clipper blade is made to be sharpened many times (how many depends on maintenance of the clipper blade and skills/equipment of a sharpener). Clippers blades can be sharpened at a fraction of the cost of a new one. Small animal and large animal blades consist of two blades, a bottom cutter (comb) and a top cutter (smaller one which is moving).
If you look closely at a bottom cutter (large blade) you will see that their are two raised railes.
The top cutter (small blade) sets on these railes. When you have your clipper blades sharpened these rails are where the material is removed to bring your blade back to being sharp.
As long as you have enough a rail an your comb blade and it is not even with the rest of the blade, your blade can be re-sharpened. It is important to note that you need to have your blade re-sharpened by a professional who has experience in sharpening clipper blades not only general sharpening.
Many times I have had blades come in from new customers who have had their blades sharpened by a general sharpener, or have used one of those small sharpeners you can buy on ebay and they say they don’t cut.
The reason these blades don’t cut is because it takes a hollow ground wheel to hone these blades sharp. Many general sharpeners use a flat wheel. Please read this article
We are using the best from the BEST hollow wheel available on the market made for special order in Europe.
Finally, It is important to have an experienced professional with a lot of practice, because your blades also need to be adjusted and tension set to have your blades cut properly.
You will cut easier and faster your dogs with sharp blade then dull one. Please check our sharpening offer here
